FOR THE LAST few days, the country has been completely and utterly charmed by Gary and Paul O’Donovan, two brothers from Skibbereen, Co. Cork competing in rowing at this year’s Olympics.
And this afternoon they only went and won a bloody silver medal!
The whole country was absolutely overjoyed — none more so than former Olympic rower Neville Maxwell.
Maxwell was in the RTÉ studios when the lads crossed the finish line and was so overcome with emotion that he shed a little tear…

His happy tears summed up the pride Ireland is feeling right now.
Wonderful.

Seeing the emotion of a pundit and past Olympian like that just puts the cherry on top for a great day for Ireland at these games!
Some match in the badminton, this is turning into some day
Great comeback by Evans. Taught after first set that the German would comfortably beat him
WHAT YA THINK OF THAT JOE BROLLY!!!!!!
This needs to stop
It was just 20minutes of fantastic TV. The race, the studio after, the boys interview, the scenes from home. A brilliant brilliant piece of TV
Great achievement. I just wonder if we will ever have a chance of a gold again. We have so few in the past 50 years. If you don’t count Michelle Smiths tainted medals there is only carruth. In 92 then katie taylor in london John Joe Nevin was close and unlucky to have such a tough opponent in Cambell the same year but I can’t see where the next one is coming from.
Watch these 2 boys in 4 years time Mick..have faith bai!
Still a few boxers to go. Taylor and conlan are big shouts.
