The county board confirmed to the Sunday Game last night that the duo departed for ‘personal reasons’. But the Irish Independent’s Colm Keys reports that Callaghan made his intentions known to manager Seamus McEnaney when it was confirmed that 38-year-old Graham Geraghty was returning to the fold.
The All-Ireland winning skipper announced on Friday that he was to make a comeback.
Harnan waited until a team meeting in Trim yesterday to inform the players and management. Geraghty played for 15 minutes in a two-point challenge match victory over Galway after a three-year absence from inter-county football.
The Sunday Game analyst Kevin McStay said: ‘I think there is some link with the Graham Geraghty return to the panel and also, my understanding is that Banty didn’t get to too many Championship matches in Meath.
