Shock defeat for Roscommon as Fermanagh mount stunning late comeback

Sean Quigley was the hero.

Fermanagh 1-14

Roscommon 0-16

SEAN QUIGLEY WAS the hero once again for Fermanagh as his point deep into injury-time gave Pete McGrath’s men a one-point win over Roscommon.

The hosts were second best throughout their encounter at Brewster Park and looked to be on the way out when they trailed by five with time running out.

However Quigley, Tomas Corrigan and Damien Kelly all scored to ensure Fermanagh entered the final 12 in this year’s All-Ireland SFC.

Much of the hype in this year’s Connacht championship surrounded the potential that the Division 2 champions possessed.

However Sligo trumped them in provincial semi-final and when the going got tough they couldn’t reproduce top form for the second week in a row up north either.

John Evan’s side will have a long summer to recuperate for their FBD League campaign next year while Fermanagh will have at least one more championship game.

In the first ever meeting between these sides Roscommon took a commanding 0-9 to 0-4 lead into half-time.

They seemed to be doing everything right, Ultan Harney and Cathal Cregg gave them an early lead and they would go on to lead 0-8 to 0-1 after 28 minutes.

At that stage Donie Shine kicked three points, all of which were frees while Cregg was also to the fore.

But they couldn’t shake off their opponents and only led by five at the break – Barry Mulrone’s point gave Fermanagh the ascendency in the second-half.

However Roscommon seemed to have something extra and Ciaran Murtagh alone had three second-half scores to his name before he was taken off.

When Harney kicked his second Roscommon looked odds on, they were 0-14 to 0-8 up but Fermanagh won a penalty and Quigley dispatched that.

It was the catalyst for their comeback although it really got going when Ryan Jones kicked their ninth point of the day and they never looked back.
