McIlroy claims WGC Bridgestone Invitational to regain world No1 ranking

The 25-year-old got the better of Sergio Garcia at Firestone Country Club.

BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONS Rory McIlroy outdueled Sergio Garcia to win the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational and regain the world number one ranking.

McIlroy erased a three-shot overnight deficit, firing a final round of four-under par 66 for a 15-under total of 265 and a two-shot win over Garcia. He will overtake Australian Adam Scott atop the world rankings, regaining the number one spot he last held in March of 2013.

Well done Rory but the question has to be asked is Sergio Garcia the biggest bottler in professional golfs historyโ€ฆ Just a observation โ€ฆ

Ah Richie in fairness Norman won multiple majors and a lot of tour events. Sergio has bottled every big tournament he has ever contended in, he putts like a 15 handicapper.

He led the tournament in strokes gained through putting, and was in the top ten on tour last season. He will be able to use his unusual claw grip for the rest of his career, unlike Scott, Bradley, Simpson or Clark. Ye must have some standard in your own club if he putts like a 15 handicapโ€ฆ.

Canโ€™t see how Garcia could be called a bottler after this, he shot a 71 on a very hard course. Recent form has been fantastic, two seconds in last two tournaments winning $1.6 million in prizemoney. And lost both tournaments to the best player in the game, if Sergio is a bottlerโ€ฆ. Then so is everyone else in the game bar Rory?

He was in contention two weeks ago in the British open and shot a 66 in the final round! Thatโ€™s hardly bottling it? Itโ€™s just easy to come to the lazy conclusion that he is a bottler. But he regularly is in contention in majors, has won the players championship and several other big tournaments. Compare that to Luke Donald for example? Never to be seen at the business end of a major, so never gets any criticism. I would have a lot of respect for the likes of Garcia and Westwood who keep contending and putting themselves up to be shot down

    Fran,

I say Sergio will be less likely to bottle it in futureโ€ฆ He is playing great golf but more so, he seems happy. The girlfriend seems to be great for him, golf is coming second and being relaxed suits him.

In the last two weeks he has being dealing with a force of nature. Rory has been close to unbeatable. Sergio had to start every second shot forty yards behind Rory yesterday, massive advantage. Roryโ€™s stats are incredible..

I wish Sergio the best, he seems like a nice guy with a passion for life now.. Coming second to Rory at the moment is like winningโ€ฆ

Unreal watching the difference between them on their drivesโ€ฆ In a โ€˜matchplayโ€™ situation like that, itโ€™s a huge psychological blow every hole.. Roryโ€™s been on fire the last couple of weeks..looked very comfortable even when Sergio got back level.. nobody can touch him in this form. Forecast for Valhalla is rain Tue/Wed, dry for the weekend with low windsโ€ฆ soft course, will suit a long, straight hitterโ€ฆ should be right up his alley for #4โ€ฆ

Would agree with youโ€ฆ Bubba Watson might be back in play, Firestone is too tight for himโ€ฆ I think Rory might be even shading Bubba at this stage. Here is the study guide to next week:

On the face of it Rory should be too strong for these guys again but golf is a funny game
