BARRING SOMETHING VERY special at this week’s Irish Open, Rory McIlroy will have at least one title come Sunday afternoon — he’ll still hold the course record for Royal Portrush’s famous Dunluce Links course.
Now the world number two and a major winner, McIlroy was just 16-years-old and still an amateur when he carded a scintillating 61 in the 2005 North of Ireland Championship.
“I was still lying in my bed last night thinking about it,” the Hollywood youngster told reporters the next day. “To shoot 61 anywhere is unbelievable but to shoot it round Royal Portrush is even better.”
