RORY McILROY HAS won the Golf Writers Trophy for 2012, but relegated his own successful Ryder Cup team to second place in the process.
The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland cemented his place at the top of the World Rankings this year, winning the USPGA Championship by a magnificent eight-shot margin.
He topped the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic and also won four other tournaments.
The European Ryder Cup side came second in the voting, with Ian Poulter third.
The 53-year-old Roger Chapman – who won the Senior PGA Championship and US Senior Open – and Great Britain and Ireland’s Curtis Cup rounded out the top five.

“The 2012 season was a superb one for every aspect of European golf and that comes across when you look at the names of the players in contention for the Golf Writers Trophy this year – therefore to come out on top of that list is a great honour,” McIlroy said.
