Here's one award Lewis Hamilton can't steal from Rory McIlroy

The world number one has rightly been recognised as the best golfer in Europe.

WE CHECKED AND there was no sign of Lewis Hamilton or his dog on the red carpet as Rory McIlory was today named the 2014 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year.

It is the second time in three seasons McIlroy has picked up the award and comes on the back of one of the greatest seasons in European Tour history.

The World Number one won four of the most prestigious titles on offer including the British Open and US PGA Championship as well as the Race to Dubai Crown – more than two million points ahead of his nearest competitor.

The Co. Down golfer was also the leading money winner on the US PGA Tour and helped Europe to glory at the Ryder Cup with three points from five, including a stunning 5 & 4 victory over Rickie Fowler in the Sunday singles.

Accepting the award, McIlroy said:

“To be named the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year for a second time is a huge honour and one I am extremely proud of. If I had won any one of those four titles it would have been a good year, but to win all four, to win The Race to Dubai, and to be part of another fantastic European victory in The Ryder Cup, means it is a great one.
