THE BACK PAIN which caused Rory McIlroy serious discomfort during last week’s Players Championship was the recurrence of a previous injury, an MRI scan has revealed.
McIlroy had to take painkillers during all four rounds at TPC Sawgrass and scans have shown that the problem was a ‘low grade response’ to a rib joint injury he suffered earlier in the year.

It remains to be seen if the world number two will be fit enough to play at the BMW PGA Championship, but McIlroy says he will make a decision on whether he will go to Wentworth or not early next week.
