Rory McIlroy just misses out on course record with stunning 64 at The Players

McIlroy sits two off the lead after a red-hot afternoon at Sawgrass.

RORY MCILROY LAUNCHED himself right back into contention with a stunning second round at The Players Championship.

After starting the day nine shots off the pace, McIlroy shot a superb 64 — and came within touching distance of breaking the course record.

Teeing up on his final hole, the par-five ninth, McIlroy needed a birdie to card the first-ever 62 at TPC Sawgrass.

But he had to settle for a bogey six and finished the day on eight-under par.
