Wayne Rooney takes a free-kick against Manchester United

Rooney hopes Irish teen starlet and other youngsters can learn from Man United defeat

The Derby County player-coach praised Jason Knight for his performance against Manchester United.

PLAYER-COACH Wayne Rooney hopes his teenage Derby County team-mates will benefit from the experience of taking on Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round.

Derby were soundly beaten 3-0 by United at Pride Park on Thursday, with Luke Shaw opening the scoring before Odion Ighaloโ€™s brace secured a quarter-final trip to Norwich City.

Home captain Rooney was facing his former club and came closer than any colleague to getting the Rams on the scoresheet, seeing a stoppage-time free-kick touched over by Sergio Romero.

However, the former United captain was joined by a trio of young prospects in midfield โ€” Max Bird, 19, Louie Sibley, 18, and Ireland U21 international Jason Knight, 19 โ€” who impressed in spells.

Sibley was central to much of the action as he enjoyed a second-half tussle with Scott McTominay that saw each player inflict some rugged challenges.

And Rooney was encouraged by what he saw despite the disappointment of defeat.

โ€œObviously Manchester United are a good team and we wanted to try to win,โ€ Unitedโ€™s record goalscorer told BT Sport.

โ€œI think the draw was quite favourable for ourselves or Manchester United, whoever got through, and they were the better team on the night.

โ€œBut I have to say for our younger players, what an experience for them, and they didnโ€™t disappoint. They had some great moments today, and this game, although we lost, will do them the world of good.โ€

Asked to assess the gap between the teams, he added: โ€œThatโ€™s the level, the difference in them handling the ball. There was always going to be that difference.

โ€œWe had to take our moments, which we had, but unfortunately we didnโ€™t. We didnโ€™t let anyone down tonight. We gave everything and, unfortunately, just came up short.โ€

Rooney suggests he is also learning in the Championship as he takes on new duties under manager Phillip Cocu.

โ€œOf course you can still learn,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s a different league to what Iโ€™m used to, different ambitions.

โ€œObviously, at Manchester United, youโ€™re always thriving to win trophies. At Derby, weโ€™re thriving to try to get promotion. It is different. And my role as a coach, trying to balance them, is different.

โ€œItโ€™s something Iโ€™m really enjoying. Iโ€™m enjoying playing football first of all โ€“ Iโ€™m feeling good, I want to continue doing that โ€“ but also that transition period of going from player to coach.

โ€œThe managerโ€™s been fantastic with me and I want to keep learning and keep trying to improve myself.โ€

Wayne Rooney is a Manchester Utd legend. All time club leading goalscorer. Derby County and Philip Coco as manager are privileged to have him as player / coach. His football experience and knowledge of the upโ€™s and downโ€™s of fame is priceless for young players. Lovely to see he still playโ€™s with a passion and enjoyโ€™s his game.

Green tinted glasses here but I thought Knight was very good, albeit in spells and maybe could have picked up Shaw for his goal. Looks a player for 18. Box to box.

He is on a beano with derby , why would a club with ambition sign a player from China whoโ€™s best days are long behind him ? Ambition โ€ฆ.. I question big time , canโ€™t blame Rooney , he was a great player , but come on derby , are ye not embarrassed? .i think ye will be in the championship a few more years from what Iโ€™m looking at , at the moment .
