PLAYER-COACH Wayne Rooney hopes his teenage Derby County team-mates will benefit from the experience of taking on Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round.
Derby were soundly beaten 3-0 by United at Pride Park on Thursday, with Luke Shaw opening the scoring before Odion Ighaloโs brace secured a quarter-final trip to Norwich City.
Home captain Rooney was facing his former club and came closer than any colleague to getting the Rams on the scoresheet, seeing a stoppage-time free-kick touched over by Sergio Romero.
However, the former United captain was joined by a trio of young prospects in midfield โ Max Bird, 19, Louie Sibley, 18, and Ireland U21 international Jason Knight, 19 โ who impressed in spells.
Sibley was central to much of the action as he enjoyed a second-half tussle with Scott McTominay that saw each player inflict some rugged challenges.
And Rooney was encouraged by what he saw despite the disappointment of defeat.
โObviously Manchester United are a good team and we wanted to try to win,โ Unitedโs record goalscorer told BT Sport.
โI think the draw was quite favourable for ourselves or Manchester United, whoever got through, and they were the better team on the night.
โBut I have to say for our younger players, what an experience for them, and they didnโt disappoint. They had some great moments today, and this game, although we lost, will do them the world of good.โ
Asked to assess the gap between the teams, he added: โThatโs the level, the difference in them handling the ball. There was always going to be that difference.
โWe had to take our moments, which we had, but unfortunately we didnโt. We didnโt let anyone down tonight. We gave everything and, unfortunately, just came up short.โ
Rooney suggests he is also learning in the Championship as he takes on new duties under manager Phillip Cocu.
โOf course you can still learn,โ he said. โItโs a different league to what Iโm used to, different ambitions.
โObviously, at Manchester United, youโre always thriving to win trophies. At Derby, weโre thriving to try to get promotion. It is different. And my role as a coach, trying to balance them, is different.
โItโs something Iโm really enjoying. Iโm enjoying playing football first of all โ Iโm feeling good, I want to continue doing that โ but also that transition period of going from player to coach.
โThe managerโs been fantastic with me and I want to keep learning and keep trying to improve myself.โ
Wayne Rooney is a Manchester Utd legend. All time club leading goalscorer. Derby County and Philip Coco as manager are privileged to have him as player / coach. His football experience and knowledge of the upโs and downโs of fame is priceless for young players. Lovely to see he still playโs with a passion and enjoyโs his game.
@Aidan Mc Partlin: Theyโre certainly paying through the nose for the privilege
@Fergus OโConnor: Red 32 is no doubt.
Green tinted glasses here but I thought Knight was very good, albeit in spells and maybe could have picked up Shaw for his goal. Looks a player for 18. Box to box.
@EnKy: Himself and Jason Molumby look top class.
He is on a beano with derby , why would a club with ambition sign a player from China whoโs best days are long behind him ? Ambition โฆ.. I question big time , canโt blame Rooney , he was a great player , but come on derby , are ye not embarrassed? .i think ye will be in the championship a few more years from what Iโm looking at , at the moment .
@Tricksy: America or China
@Tricksy: cow pie!!!!
