WITH GREAT BLACK and white fanfare, Juventus unveiled Cristiano Ronaldo today after his €112 million transfer from Real Madrid.
After greeting supporters and undergoing a medical – which appeared to necessitate him wearing a string vest while walking on a treadmill – the Portuguese star said he was ‘grateful’ for the opportunity to join the European powerhouse as ‘players of my age go to China or Qatar’.
Ronaldo would have undoubtedly had offers to take up lucrative moves to a league out of the spotlight. However, the 33-year-old continually sets his sights on winning Ballons D’or through his career and sustaining his presence in the Champions League is a route back to that stage.
“I’m different from other players who think their careers are over when they’re my age,” Ronaldo said at his unveiling this evening.
“I want to show that I’m not like the others, I’m different.
“Players of my age go to China or Qatar so coming to such an important club at this stage in my career makes me very happy.”
Juventus have won the last seven Serie A titles and have claimed the Italian double for years in a row, so the addition of Ronaldo is a statement of their intent to succeed in Europe and claim a first Champions League crown since 1996.
“I need to work hard because the Champions League is not easily won. I hope I can help,” says the five-time winner.
“We’re going to fight for not just Champions League, but also Serie A and the others trophies.”
