NOT THAT IT needed to, but UFC 189 just got even bigger.

Ireland’s Conor McGregor meets featherweight champion Jose Aldo in a hugely-anticipated title fight at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on 11 July and, tonight, the UFC has announced that current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will also defend his belt against Rory MacDonald on the same night.

Lawler overcame MacDonald by split decision when the pair fought at UFC 167 in 2013 and the re-match has been pencilled in as the co-main event.

Another Irish UFC fighter, Donegal’s Joseph Duffy, is currently training out in Tristar gym in Montreal with MacDonald ahead of his debut fight at UFC 185 on 14 March.
