ROBBIE KEANE COULD be about to join Indian Super League side Atletico de Kolkata.
According to a report in The Irish Sun this morning, the 37-year old spoke with club officials about a move last week.
The club did not immediately respond to a request for a statement from The42 this morning.
Atletico de Kolkata are managed by Keane’s former Spurs strike partner Teddy Sheringham and take their name from the fact they were part owned by Atletico Madrid when they were founded.
They are twice winners of the ten-team Indian Super League.
Keane would not be the first Irish player to ply his trade in India; former Kilkenny City player Colin Falvey had a stint with the Kerala Blasters when the Super League was founded.
37-year old Keane had previously been linked with moves to both the SSE Airtricity League and the Championship.

His boyhood Asian club.
@mark kenny: enough of the smart comments, it’s a great move for Bobbie! A player of his stature is a massive addition to an ever growing league! Hopefully more players will follow suit. I reckon Seanie McGuire will be an Indian league legend in years too come, mark my words
@Willy Carroll: well put
@Willy Carroll: Ahh lighten up ffs.
@Dave Murray:
Well said
@mark kenny: poor Rob
@Willy Carroll: He’s more clubs than Rory Mcilroy ffs
He used to play up front with Mother Teresa.Now he’s playing in her home town.Class act is Robbie Keane.
@mark kenny: hats off to you for that comment
@mark kenny: poor Robbie
@mark kenny: but mother teresa s home town is Skopje!
Is he going there next when he turns 40?
@mark kenny: Brilliant comment. Reminds a bit of the Mario Rosenstock slag on Late Late a few yrs back
@john culhane: it’s far from poor Robbie. It’s very rich Robbie
Claudia better not go anywhere alone.
@Dave Murray: from what I gather, she’s really not that hindu it.
@Alan O’Rourke:
Hope after a hot curry she can findaloo.
It’s been his lifelong dream…sorry
@Lurfic: hilarious. Never heard that before
@Connery83: The reality is that Robbie Keane has abused the ‘boyhood dream’ line and that is what makes it funny.
@Peter D W Clancy: you’re great craic altogether
@Peter D W Clancy: I’m pretty sure he used it twice, when signing for Liverpool and Celtic, most people I know follow Celtic and an EPL team…
It’s getting embarrassing now , he should have retired 2/3 years ago with a bit of dignity now he’s just like a bad smell that won’t go away .
@GRONG: a bit like Davy Fitz
@John Ryan: ah now!
@GRONG: he was still scoring goals for fun with galaxy untill he left. He is surely entitled to play on as long as he can still benefit a team. Does it really matter if he drops down in standard. He has already created a legacy that any player would be proud of
@Anto Mc Donald:
I agree Anto, why should a fit professional have to retire before he’s ready? Why not keep playing for as long as he enjoys it and some club (what ever standard) is happy to sign him and of course pay him? What could he possibly be embarrassed about?
I’ve never understood this mockery of players moving to clubs of less stature when they get older (and of course slower). It seems to be less of an issue when players are dropping down a division or two in England.
Good luck to him, I say!
@GRONG:
Obviously you know nothing about sport, or the 45 fools who liked your comment.
@GRONG:…and with the intense heat in India, the smell will only get worse. Unless he’s been offered a staggering amount of money, I can’t see the attraction of living in India myself.
@Con Murphy: ha ha ha , go away ya muppet . Obvisouly a Robbie fan boy .
@GRONG: maybe he just likes playing ball mad I know
It was his boyhood dream to finish his career in India.
@John Ryan:
Especially Atletico De Kolcata
@John Ryan: as a city fan,hope he doesn’t finish at rovers
@billy Dorney:
As a Rovers fan,i hope he doesn’t finish at Rovers.
I stopped reading at “the Sun”
@Tim Riggins: my God, wouldn’t wipe my ass with that rag
Keep playing Robbie !! You’ll be retired long enough !!
Best of luck to him
@Paul Parker:
Are you “the” Paul Parker. Go on!
Would he not be better off finishing in the LOI instead of India. It’s not like he needs the €€€€€.
His wife will love that
@Liam Collins:
A chance to try out the Karma Sutra.
@mark kenny:
I don’t think you have to be in India to try that.
Maybe suggest it to your own missus and see how it goes?
@Gagsy 99:
We can have Chicken Korma,Poppodams and Onion Bhajis over here,Gagsy,but it would feel a tad more authentic if you had a nibble in New Delhi.
@mark kenny: The take away in Crumlin?
Robbie Keane is a journeyman professional footballer,who served his Country and the clubs he was engaged by to his utmost ability .
I hope he is well paid for this move ,Best of Luck Robbie
@Brian O Reilly:
Journeyman! You are sad.
Still working, fair play Robbie, GREATEST EVER IRISH PLAYER AND CAPTAIN!Thanks for all the goals and memories.
It’s a dream come true to play for……. What are they called again?
@Joe Soap: Calcutta Celtic!
Forlán has been ripping it up over there for a while. Lads, please stop the ‘boyhood dream’ craic will ye. Fuxking not remotely funny anymore. Hasn’t been for a long time.
Can’t be for the money. Would love to know what is motivating him to play there.
I’d be very interested to hear what Willy Carroll thinks of this, he’s a massive Robbie Keane fan
@Flembomb: you know him so well!!!
Can’t get a game in the English leagues.. Scottish.. USA.. Chinese … Irish North and South … Womens league.. but the Indian league….has the just eat App on his phone. What a way to finish….
Well money must be hotter over there I guess
Another transfer singing on fee
He got more money from transfers
Bombay Trots vs Delhi Belly is a slippery fixture.
Keeeaaaannnnoòooo LEGEND.
Enormous tv audiences out there. Massive potential for a financial comeback for poor Robbie. A bit rapie though.
I Hope Robbie wears a Hurling helmet to keep the bluebottles off his jem.
Darren O’Dea played in the Indian league too before he moved to Dundee.
