Update: Calf injury to Keane prompts Kevin Doyle recall

Glenn Whelan, who missed Friday’s draw against Sweden, has been passed fit for the World Cup qualifier against Austria.

UPDATED 16:35

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS recalled Kevin Doyle after a calf strain ruled Robbie Keane out of the World Cup qualifier against Austria.

Keane left this morning’s training session in Malahide early to have a scan on the injury, and though Trapattoni expected his captain to be fit for Tuesday, he was ruled out this afternoon.

Wolves striker Doyle was a controversial absentee when the Italian named his original squad and the Wexford man expressed his disappointment to be culled from the panel by text message.

A statement from the FAI today said: “The manager has spoken to Kevin, and he will link up with the squad in time for training in Malahide tomorrow morning.”

Midfielder Glenn Whelan, whose ankle injury led to an 11th-hour reshuffle in the team which drew against Sweden, has been passed fit and trained earlier today.

“Whelan has recovered,” Trapattoni said. “He trained without problem and will be ready for the game.”
