Richie Towell heading back on loan to Championship club

The Irish midfielder helped Rotherham to win promotion from League One last season.

ROTHERHAM HAVE CONFIRMED the arrival of Richie Towell on a season-long loan, pending FA and Premier League clearance.

The Dubliner, who has been on the books at Brighton since 2016, spent last term with the Millers — making 45 appearances and scoring six goals as they earned promotion from League One.

A return appeared to be on the cards this summer, and, with the Football League transfer window set to close at 5pm today, the club have announced that 26-year-old Towell will enjoy a second spell at New York Stadium.

The former Celtic academy player shot to prominence under Stephen Kenny at Dundalk, where he won back-to-back league titles and the FAI Cup in 2015. In his final season with the Lilywhites, he hit 25 goals from midfield.

Towell will now link up with Galway native Ryan Manning (who is on loan from QPR), Limerick midfielder Anthony Forde and ex-Ireland international Darren Potter at Rotherham.

Manager Paul Warne is hoping to have him available for tomorrow’s away trip to face Wigan Athletic.
