Richard Green’s birdie blitz put him within three strokes of the lead in Cologne.

Australia’s Richard Green carded an outstanding round of 62 at the BMW International Open in Cologne this afternoon. Part of Green’s -10 Saturday was an astonishing scoring run from the 10th to 17th holes.

Green hit the turn at -5 and well back from the leaders. He birdied 10, parred the next and then birdied the next three holes. An eagle followed on 15 before Green picked up shots on 16 and 17. By the time he dinked in a par putt on 18, the Aussie had soared to -14. He took only 28 strokes coming home.

His stunning round sees Green tied with seven others, including Henrik Stenson and Francesco Molinari, on -14. Spain’s Pablo Larrazábal leads the way on -17 after carding rounds of 69, 63 and 67 over the opening three rounds.

The leading Irish contenders are Michael Hoey and Shane Lowry. Hoey, from Antrim, is five off the lead while Offaly native Lowry is a shot further back. The only other Irish competitor in the field is Damien McGrane [-5].
