A NEW GENERATION of Irish pundit is emerging ahead of a busy summer of football.
Damien Duff has earned praise for his recent apeparances on RTร and has been mooted as a longterm replacement for John Giles.
And today TV3 have announced that Richard Dunne โ another stalwart of Irish campaigns โ will join their Champions League coverage next week.
The pair were, of course, a major part of the last Irish team to reach a major international tournament in 2012, with Giovanni Trapattoni at the helm.
Ballymount bosses today announced that Dunne will be a special studio guest for Tuesdayโs UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg between his former side Manchester City and Paris St Germain.
Dunne will be joined by former team-mate Kevin Kilbane, ex-boss Brian Kerr, Neil Lennon and host Tommy Martin.
Now weโre talking, Is it just me or is Richard Sadlier morphing into Dunphy?
Heโs waayyy worse, at least dunphy was entertaining
Paul McGrath turns up regularly as a pundit on MUTV and, sorry to say heโs painful to watch. He looks and sounds like heโs half pi$$ed most of the time. Keeps speaking in cliches. The only good thing I can say is that heโs better than Ron Atkinson.
Paul McGrath is a legend who is one of the greatest players ever to wear the green jersey. I listen to the talksport podcast & he comes on regularly to speak & I always want to hear what a great player like him thinks. And if your watching mutv, you ainโt going to be entertained. Especially this season
Not denying that Paul McGrath was a great player Anthony but thatโs not the point. Itโs his roll as a pundit that I was referring to. Also, I donโt watch MUTV to be entertained as they donโt have Unitedโs games live except for U21s and pre season games. Itโs mostly for club news, pre and post match analysis and punditry and itโs it this context ONLY that I commented about Paul McGrath. I always admired him as a player. This article is, after all, referring to ex players who are now pundits on Irish TV.
Iโm actually very surprised that Paul McGrath has never been used as a Pundit. Watched him on second captains and he was gas craic. Great knowledge of the game plus an all round gas character. And letโs be honest your man dietmar Hamann is about as interesting as a wet duffle coat
He canโt handle pressure unfortunately โ BBC hired him for Japan / Korea & he was sacked before tournament started. His demons are never too far away. Shame as I like listening to him & sure he was a childhood hero.
Much as we all love Paul, thereโs potentially an issue with reliability to turn up on set when required. I like Hamann, heโs one of the few panelists on Irish TV to contest the business end of a world cup and champions league in the modern era. He brings a bluntness and insight.
Agree regards Hamann. Felling auld now with duffer and dunner going into punditry.
Duffer is very good, much better than sadlier and the rest.
Richie Sadler never played the game at a decent level so canโt be a good pundit- rubbish. On that basis, Arsene Wenger, Mourinho, Rafa etc shouldnโt be good managers as they were not top footballers.
How tichie saflier is pundit at all defies belief. Never played the game at a decent level, never played in big games and never played against big name players. Ryle Nugent needs his head examined having sadlier anywhere near an RTE football panel
Worst of all is Kenny Cunningham!
As much as I admire Paul McGrath, I donโt recall him being at the business end of a champions league campaign.
