Red Sox honour victims of Boston Marathon bombing

“Even though we might not be in Boston right now, we carry this with us”, said manager John Farrell.

THE BOSTON RED Sox honoured victims of Monday’s bombing in their home city by posting a 7-2 road win over Cleveland in the MLB on Tuesday.

The players were in buses en route to the airport when they were told of the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured almost 200.

They regrouped to score a victory that improved their season record to 9-4, keeping them on top of the American League’s East division.

Manager John Farrell said the team had been playing for the city against Cleveland.

“This was a good way to send some positive energy back toward Boston. (The tragedy) was fresh on everyone’s mind.

“Even though we might not be in Boston right now, we carry this with us.”

The Indians played the Neil Diamond song ‘Sweet Caroline’ – broadcast at Red Sox home games for more than a decade – before the encounter, and teams across the league followed suit in solidarity with Boston.

The game was decided by a seven-run second inning from the visitors – Mike Napoli hit a three-run double, while Pedro Ciriaco scored another run with a sacrifice fly and Jacoby Ellsbury added an RBI single.

With Monday Jackie Robinson day, players from both sides wore the number 42 to honour Robinson, the first African-American man to play in the MLB.
