Irish hockey star Rebecca Barry nominated for ESPY for wonder goal

Jon Hamm hosts the LA ceremony in July.

THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN every day if you’re an Irish hockey player.

Rebecca Barry has once again found herself in some exclusive company as she’s been nominated for an ESPY award by heavyweight US sports broadcaster ESPN.

The Limerick native, playing for the Richmond Spiders against Temple in the states, made ESPN’s top 10 plays last October.

The midfielder tipped the ball past her opponents a number of times before lashing the ball home from a tight angle, all inside the first minute of the game. Richmond went on to win the match 4-1.

That goal has now found Barry in the mix for the prestigious ESPY — Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly — award, which is open to a public vote. The goal has been named among the top 16 plays across all sports in the 2012/13 season which includes a strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a spectacular NBA alley-oop.

The award ceremony is hosted by Mad Men star Jon Hamm in LA next month. Vote here for Barry… or Zlatan.
