Thrilling Irish Champion Stakes sees Dettori pipped by French Derby winner

Meanwhile at Doncaster, Laura Mongan became the first female trainer to have a St Leger winner.

ALMANZOR GOT THE better of the Frankie Dettori-ridden Found in a thrilling Irish Champion Stakes this evening.

The French Derby winner romped to victory in a race that included no less than eight individual Group One winners at Leopardstown.

Christophe Soumillon and Almanzor — trained by Jean-Claude Rouget — surged home ahead of Dettori and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Breeders Cup winner, both of whom went off at 7/1 in an exciting finish.

There were better fortunes for Aidan O’Brien earlier in the day at Leopardstown, with Ryan Moore cruising to a three-and-a-quarter-length victory on Alice Springs (5/1) in the Group One Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes, as Dettori was second again on Persuasive (5/2).

Meanwhile, Harbour Law prevailed in a dramatic contest this afternoon at Doncaster which saw Laura Mongan become the first female trainer to have a St Leger winner.

Ridden by George Baker, the 22/1 shot caused an upset by pipping 14/1 runner-up Ventura Storm and third-placed Housesofparliament (7/1) in the closing stages.

Idaho, the 4/6 favourite, unseated his jockey Seamie Heffernan coming down the home straight after stumbling when travelling well behind the leaders.
