Purslow: Liverpool will keep Suarez despite biting ban

‘What would a commercial enterprise get from getting rid of their most important player, probably at a discounted price, because of a disciplinary problem?’

LIVERPOOL’S FORMER MANAGING director Christian Purslow does not feel the club will sell Luis Suarez, despite his ban for biting.

Banned for 10 games by the Football Association for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in the sides’ 2-2 draw at Anfield, leading many to question whether Anfield chiefs would stick with the controversial forward.

However, Purslow believes Suarez’s form will be the deciding factor in the mind of the club, with the striker having notched 23 goals in the Premier League this season.

“A player commits an offence, you discipline him, and then the authorities might discipline him. That is the issue,” said the 49-year-old who was involved bringing Suarez to the club from Ajax. “What has that got to do with whether Luis Suarez should be playing from Liverpool or not?

“He is easily the most effective and important player in the team. He is enormously valuable. What would a commercial enterprise get from getting rid of their most important player, probably at a discounted price, because of a disciplinary problem? No football club in the world would do that.”

Purslow also said he was of the opinion that the ban was harsh although he described the incident as “very unusual”, “graphic” and “unappetising”.

“It was probably more than most of us expected, but that should not diminish in any way the seriousness of the offence,” he said.
