THE UNITED STATES are so confident of capturing the Presidents Cup that they have released their lucky mascot back to the wild.
Sammy the squirrel is back hustling for nuts and stocking up for the winter after his 15 minutes of scurrying, loveable fame ticked down in Dublin, Ohio. Before the start of play on day two of the USA v Internationals golf event, US captain Davis Love III released Sammy from his cosy box and into a tree off the second hole fairway.
Sammy befriended Tiger Woods and his American teammates on day one of the tournament as the home side took a one-point lead. The USA, inspired by deadly duos Woods and Matt Kuchar and Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson, have kept the Internationals at arm’s length since.
Woods and Kuchar turned on the style in the foursomes on day three, today, and defeated the South African pairing of Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel 4&2.
Shot of the day came courtesy of Australia’s Marc Leishman, who stuck a 170-yard iron approach within six inches of the pin to clinch a point for the Internationals. Partnering Angel Cabrera, the Aussie was instrumental in securing a vital 2&1 win over Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker.
