CHRISTIAN BENTEKE RETURNED returned from a three-match ban to score the winning goal in Aston Villa’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Crystal Palace.
The Belgium international was immediately restored to Villa’s starting XI for Tuesday’s clash at Selhurst Park after serving a suspension for a red card in a 2-1 loss against Tottenham last month. And he broke the deadlock with a composed finish in the first half to help Paul Lambert’s men end a nine-match winless run in the top flight.
West Ham showed impressive resolve to win 2-1 at West Brom on Tuesday and continue their excellent start to the Premier League season.
The hosts burst out of the blocks at The Hawthorns and took a deserved lead thanks to Craig Dawson’s powerful 10th-minute header. West Ham’s character was on display for all to see, though, as captain Kevin Nolan – drafted in to replace Mark Noble who has a calf problem – nodded in the equaliser after 35 minutes. And defender James Tomkins scored a header of his own on the stroke of half-time to the delight of the travelling fans.
Struggling West Brom ramped up the pressure in the second half, with Victor Anichebe causing several problems, but they lacked the quality to score a second goal. West Ham remain fifth – one point below Manchester United – despite their win, but are entrenched in the top half of the table after their fifth win in eight matches.
Swansea City 2-0 QPR
Late goals from Ki Sung-yueng and Wayne Routledge ensured Swansea City beat QPR 2-0 to prolong the London club’s wait for an away point.
Goalkeeper Robert Green had produced a string of saves to deny the Welsh side, but Ki struck 12 minutes from time with a clinical left-foot finish before Routledge added a second to ensure Rangers’ miserable form on the road continued.
Tuesday’s result means Harry Redknapp’s side have now lost all seven games on their travels in the Premier League following their promotion last season, scoring only two goals in the process.
Defeat was harsh on Green in particular after the former Norwich City and West Ham keeper made stunning saves to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wilfried Bony in particular. Victory for Garry Monk’s side moved them into the top six, while Rangers remain in the relegation zone following their latest away loss.

Burnley moved out of the Premier League’s bottom three after extending their unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United.
The Lancashire club headed into Tuesday’s encounter, which marked manager Sean Dyche’s 100th game in charge, having claimed seven points from their previous three outings. And Burnley delivered another performance that suggested they are steadily adapting to life in the Premier League by standing firm against Alan Pardew’s side.
It had looked as if last season’s Championship runners-up would claim all three points when midfielder George Boyd’s vicious effort gave them the lead in the 34th minute.
But Newcastle, prior to Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to West Ham, have been one of the top flight’s form sides in recent weeks and fought back to earn a share of the spoils.
