FRANK LAMPARD ONCE again underlined his value to Manchester City with the only goal as the defending champions kept the pressure on Chelsea with a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester City.
The veteran former England and Chelsea midfielder has chipped in with vital contributions over the course of his loan from affiliated Major League Soccer outfit New York City FC, and manager Manuel Pellegrini this week stated his wish to keep Lampard beyond the scheduled end of his temporary spell at the end of the month.
Handed a start at the King Power Stadium, Lampard responded in the 40th minute with his sixth Manchester City goal and the 175th of his Premier League career, moving level with Thierry Henry in fourth place on the all-time list.
The title holders, who were forced to hand a maiden senior start to 18-year-old Jose Angel Pozo after Edin Dzeko suffered a calf injury during the warm-up, ground out an important result to record a seventh consecutive victory in all competitions.
They remain three points behind leaders Chelsea.

Southampton slumped to their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday, missing a penalty in a 1-0 loss to struggling Burnley at Turf Moor.
Dusan Tadic saw his second-half penalty saved by Tom Heaton before Ashley Barnes capitalised on uncharacteristically sloppy Saints defending to net the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute.
After a magnificent start to the campaign, Ronald Koeman’s Southampton have now lost four games on the bounce for the first time since the opening four matches of their return to the Premier League last season.
Despite the reverse, they remain in fifth place in the table, while Burnley climb out of the relegation zone for now after bouncing back from last weekend’s defeat at Queens Park Rangers, their only loss in six games.

Craig Gardner scored the only goal as West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at home to Aston Villa, who had West Brom old boy Kieran Richardson dismissed for a studs-up lunge on Stephane Sessegnon.
Draw specialists Sunderland halted West Ham’s impressive winning run with a 1-1 stalemate at the Stadium of Light.
Meanwhile, Stoke City striker Peter Crouch swiftly cancelled out a headed 11th-minute opener by James McArthur as Mark Hughes’s team claimed a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
