Premier League review: Another happy return

Paul Scholes set Manchester United on the way to victory on his first start since retiring (for the first time). Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur slipped up and Liverpool could only draw at home again

AFTER THIERRY HENRY, Paul Scholes stepped up for another happy return. The returning midfielder set Manchester United on the way to a 3-0 victory over Bolton to claim their first win in four.

Despite Scholes’s goal just before half-time, United were never comfortable until they claimed a second through Danny Welbeck. Rooney set up that and Scholes’s goal to atone for his earlier penalty miss after Welbeck had been brought down by Zat Knight.

Michael Carrick finally wrapped up the game with a low, curled strike from outside the area to make the score look much more comfortable than the game actually was.

Tottenham’s title chances took a hit, however, as they could only draw 1-1 at home to Wolves. Steven Fletcher even put Mick McCarthy’s side ahead before Luka Modric pulled one back. Spurs couldn’t capitalise on their late pressure however.

It was much the same story at Stamford Bridge, but for the away team. Chelsea claimed a 1-0 win but they were quite fortunate to get it as Sunderland couldn’t make the most of their late domination and David Luiz had a general nightmare. Chelsea, however, had the early insurance of Frank Lampard’s goal. It was somewhat unfortunate for Fernando Torres, however, who scissors-kicked off the bar to allow Lampard the opportunity.

No such luck for Liverpool hit another blank as well as a draw at home. There was no real late rally, however, as Stoke comfortably held on for a 0-0.

At the bottom, Blackburn claimed quite a result by beating Fulham 3-1 despite being down to 10 for most of the game. Aiyegbeni Yakubu got sent off for raking Danny Murphy in an appalling challenge.

Morten Gamst Pedersen, however, soon scored a free-kick (the first in a while for a previous specialist) before David Dunn made it two. Damien Duff pulled one back for Fulham, but Mauro Formica wrapped things up late on.

In the middle of the table, Everton came from behind to draw 1-1 with Aston Villa. Stephen Ireland set up Darren Bent for the opener, only for Victor Anichebe to strike back. Norwich, meanwhile, won 2-1 at West Brom. Shane Long scored a penalty for Roy Hodgson’s side but that was in between goals for Andrew Surman and Steve Morison.
