Poll: who will you supporting in the Rugby World Cup now that Ireland are out?

Following Saturday’s demoralising defeat, who will you be cheering from here on in?

THE DREAM IS over. Ireland will not be winning the 2011 Rugby World Cup, having exited at the quarter-final stage yet again.

So sadly, the competition no longer evokes quite the same sense of excitement for the average Irish rugby fan.

However, it’s easy to forget that there are still four games left to play and a number of intriguing questions to be answered.

With that in mind, who are you going to be supporting for here on in?

Poll Results:

Wales - to show that we were beaten by the best. (854)
New Zealand - they play the best brand of rugby. (309)
Don't care - Ireland are the only team for me. (221)
France - to prove that Lièvremont is a mad genius. (169)
Australia - all my friends live there. (85)

Considering the support we got from the NZ fans during the tournament, they deserve our support.

how much of that support was based on us beating Australia in the group stages though ? Kiwi’s will generally look favorably on anyone whom beats the Aussies

Considering what New Zealand did to BOD 2 world cups ago, I won’t be supporting them.

Either Northern Hemisphere team, but hopefully Wales.

Joan. Couple of mistakes in ur comment – the incident involving BOD took place at the Lions tour of NZ in 2005, not at the World Cup. The perpetrator of the ‘spear ‘ tackle was Mealanu (who still plays) not the NZ team as u imply. I agree with Nigel’s comment and hope NZ prevail.

I’d say it has more to do with the cocky self-entitled attitude all Aussie sports-people exude.

gotta go with Wales, they’re one of the home nations, are playing really well and would be seen as the minnow’s in the last 4 (never made it to a final before).

One certainly wouldn’t begrudge the trophy to NZ but I think it would be better for Rugby in this hemisphere were either France or Wales to prevail. Allez les bleus for me.

whilst i would generally agree with a Northern Hemisphere win, the French don’t deserve it (imho) nor do i think i could tolerate 4 years of French smugness if they won (they are the worst winners ever)

@Conor, we’ve survived England winning it in ’03, we can surely deal with the French brand of arrogance. To be honest I’ll be supporting whoever gets to the final from the Wales/France tie. In any event I think it’s a moot point, the perpetual tag of chokers aside, I think NZ will win it.

I vote for Wales but not for the reason offered in the poll! Want to see northern hemisphere team do well and hopefully win, the alternative is France…..no vote there from me.
