GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI WANTS to remain on as manager of Ireland’s national football team.
Though the Italian is keen to extend his stay into a third campaign, FAI bosses are waiting to see how the Euro2012 qualifying bid works out for the Boys in Green.
Ireland drew 0-0 in Russia despite a 90-minute onslaught from the hosts on Tuesday. Later, Armenia blew Group B wide open with an incredible 4-0 win in Slovakia.
Yesterday, Trap seemed to send a shot across the bows, reminding John Delaney – in a press conference with the soccer writers – that he may have other options.
There have not yet been any discussions with Abbotstown chiefs and the fate of Trap and his backroom team is dependent on the next two games: Andorra and those Armenians.
But what do you think? Should Trap get the contract he wants?
Whatever happens whelan and Andrews need to go!
How quickly some people forget. I know the draw with Russia was was a bit lucky but we are very hard to beat away and have won matches where previously a draw would have been acceptable. I think he can improve this team again. He needs a better approach for home matches. Armenia at home will probably be torture to watch but maybe they can start to play a bit.
We have matched good teams. The only down side is his conservatism surrendering midfield and sticking to 442 so rigidly.
The only person even worth considering would be Mick McCarthy.
Who have we beaten in this campaign where a draw would have been acceptable? Just about won in Armenia. Defence has been solid yet again, I agree. But it wins we need. We didn’t lose in world cup qualifying either but that end well! Fingers cross for October first. Worry about trap after!
Any chance we could get Stephen Reid out of retirement?
Anyone remember life before Trap? Anyone? It was a pretty dark and lonely place.
Also, don’t give him a new contract unless he ensures our qualification in advance.
We may yet qualify but it is time to change surely either way. Trap’s sides are just not enjoyable to watch and sticking with the 4 4 2 system is ridiculously old fashioned in the modern international game. He is too conservative and cautious. He is also a very stubborn man and he seems unwilling to attend premier league or championship matches. It’s obvious he doesn’t visit Stoke or Ipswich much as Whelan and Andrews are two of the poorest midfielders that have ever worn the green jersey. We need a fresh approach.
just because the time before trap was awful does not mean we should stick with him cos he isn’t as bad. i want to watch Ireland with excitement not blanket boring defence. we have good enough players that are not playing the way they like. somebody else now- and get rid of yer man in charge of fia!
We don’t have the players to be exciting as a team, we are Ireland and I am proud of the players and Trapp. Brazil we are not, let’s build, not dismantle.
Bye trap
