Podge Collins earns straight red card for helmet interference

The Clare dual star was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

CLARE FORWARD PODGE COLLINS was left to reflect on some pointless needle with Wexford’s Dave Redmond that earned him a straight red card in his side’s win-or-bust hurling qualifiers clash this afternoon.

With Clare trailing Wexford by five points, just before the break, Collins bumped Redmond with his shoulder before reaching up to yank his opponent’s face mask. A linesman, who was in close vicinity, intervened before referee Cathal McAllister joined the scene and issued Collins his marching orders.

Here is a short clip of the incident, via RTÉ.ie.

Clare boss Davy Fitzgerald was not impressed one bit with the decision and harangued the match officials as they left the pitch at half-time.

According to hurling’s rule 5.20, which has recently been amended to result in an immediate red card, reads: “To behave in any way which is dangerous to an opponent, including to deliberately pull on, take hold of a faceguard or any other part of an opponent’s helmet.”

What did you make of the decision?
