Phil Neville more popular than Obama

Everton captain tops Twitter trends lists as fans share his superpowers.

EVERTON CAPTAIN PHIL Neville – a man not known for being either tech-savvy or charismatic – rose to the top of Twitter’s trends list last night.

The former Manchester United man overtook US President Barack Obama, for a time, as Toffees fans riffed on their skipper’s myriad attributes.

At one point Gary’s little brother was the third most talked about subject in the world on the website, behind ‘African Americans’ – as there are now no African Americans in the US senate after Tuesday’s mid-term elections – and ‘RIP Andy’, in commemoration of a dead American professional surfer.

In the wake of Gareth Bale’s headline-grabbing performance at White Hart Lane against Champions League holders  Inter Milan, Neville – who kept the Welsh winger quiet in a Premier League clash recently – rose to viral noteriety as fans joked about his ‘superpowers’.

Supporters tweeted:

Death once had a near Phil Neville experience

Phil Neville doesn’t use the force … he is the force!

The Queen sings ‘God Save Phil Neville’.

When Phil Neville crosses the cars look both ways.

It takes around 5,000 tweets about a subject to make it a top trend.

Later, his former Everton team-mate Landon Donovan – who spent part of last season on loan at Goodison Park summed up the madness:

Phil Neville is trending?!? What has this world come to?!?!?!?
