Departures Lounge: Sean Connery and Tina Fey rate the day's transfer tittle-tattle

Perch to Wigan, Shelvey to Swansea (probably) and the rest of Wednesday’s movers and shakers.

Will this happen?

Wigan land Perch: Sean Connery says we should start today’s round-up with some actual hard news and so we’re off to the DW Stadium where Wigan have signed Newcastle defender James Perch. The “highly versatile” Perch —  Wigan’s words, not ours — joins on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Shelvey no longer an ugly duckling but a Swan: Jonjo Shelvey looks all but certain to join Swansea City after they agreed a £6 million fee for the Liverpool midfielder. All that’s left is for Shelvey to discuss personal terms and he’ll be off to join the Laudrup revolution.

Will this happen?

Parisian walkways for Cavani?: Is Jose Mourinho on the brink of his first defeat as Chelsea manager — before the season even starts? The Mirror report that Paris Saint-Germain are playing hardball in a bid to sign Edinson Cavani from Napoli and, apparently, money is no object. £53 million is the price currently being touted (or £3 million more than Fernando Torres if you want to look at it that way).

Ruddy good deal?: Norwich don’t want to sell goalkeeper John Ruddy but they will if they get £10 million in crisp £20 notes. Do Chelsea want him that badly?

Benteke to Spurs: Villa fans, look away now. It seems that those pesky rumours about Andre Villas-Boas’ interest in Christian Benteke won’t go away. Would you take £25 million for him?

Will this happen?

Ronny’s return: It’s looking less and less likely that Cristiano Ronaldo will be back in Old Trafford this season — but don’t take our word for it. Here’s what he said himself: “Everyone knows that it is a club that is still in my heart and I really, really miss. But now my life is in Spain.”

Irish Deal of the Day

Five Billos for Noel Hunt. The striker, who was out of contract with Reading, has signed a two-year contract with Leeds United.
