Referee somehow waves play on as Costly is rugby tackled in the box

John Hartson described Frickson Erazo’s close attention in the box as ‘a bear-hug’.

HONDURAS WERE DENIED a clear-cut penalty as they attempted to battle back from a 2-1 deficit against Ecuador at Curitiba tonight.

Carlo Costly, who scored the Honduras opener, was wrestled to the ground in the Ecuador box with 15 minutes remaining in the Group E clash. Frickson Erazo’s foul went unpunished as a corner was awarded.

As former Wales striker John Hartson exclaimed on BBC radio commentary duty: “Erazo is all over Costly there. If that is not a penalty, I don’t know what is. That was a bear-hug, Erazo made no attempt to get the ball. The referee has to be braver to give it.”
