The 38-year-old undertook a fitness test this weekend to assess her chances of overcoming a long-standing problem with osteoarthritis.

However, Radcliffe failed the test and will not take part in the 26.2 mile event.
UK Athletics will now have to take a decision about whether or not to call up a replacement for Radcliffe.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, she was forced to stop mid-race and dissolved into tears.
