Team Europe had some classic vest 'banter' at their Ryder Cup press conference

Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes have nothing but respect for their captain – but they still took the mick out of his clothing choices.

PAUL MCGINLEY AND the victorious European Ryder Cup team were in high spirits when they sat down to meet the world’s media yesterday evening.

As they fielded questions on their Gleneagles triumph, Lee Westwood cracked open a bottle or two of champagne and the men of the moment made sure to enjoy themselves.

The conversation even tailed off into a discussion on whether captain McGinley had worn a vest to shield himself from the Scottish chill over the weekend. You know, because vests are so uncool.

Here’s the transcript (via ASAP Sports):

vest

PAUL MCGINLEY: I’m in the twilight of my career now, 47 years of age, old man –

STEPHEN GALLACHER: He wears a vest

(Laughter)

SERGIO GARCIA: Come on, it has been –

MCGINLEY: It’s been cold out there hanging around on a cart. I don’t understand, most of us wear vests don’t we, nowadays?

LEE WESTWOOD: To be fair, they were more Spanx than a vest.

(Laughter) (Players singing, ‘Paul McGinley wears a vest.’)

MCGINLEY: I saw Rory wearing a vest when it was cold one day.

RORY MCILROY: It had sleeves.

JUSTIN ROSE: If you’re under 40, it’s called compression.

JAMIE DONALDSON: It wasn’t a wife beater.

(Laughter)
