9 reasons Paul McGinley should get the Ryder Cup captain's job ahead of Monty

Not that we’re biased.

1. McGinley has serious Ryder Cup pedigree

He’s taken part in three successful tournaments , been a vice-captain and holed the winning putt on his debut at the Belfry in 2002. Not bad.

2. As Superintendent Chalmers says of Principal Skinner: he seems to know the children’s names

The Dubliner was very much a part of the European team that staged the event’s greatest ever comeback in Chicago last year.

3. Because his nickname isn’t Mrs Doubtfire

Monty’s is unfortunately. If you’re an American golf fan at least.

4. Because Rory says so

And he’s wearing the Nike swoosh now and is world No 1. So there.

5. Because he hasn’t done it already

And Monty has. You might have noticed he mentioned it once or twice during Sky Sports’ Ryder Cup coverage from Medinah last September.

6. McGinley is buddies with Jim McGuinness and has said ‘I would absolutely love to play for this guy’.

I suspect Jim wouldn’t like Monty.

7. McGinley’s never felt the need to explain to people that they are, indeed, human

8. McGinley owns this leather jacket AND knows Eddie Jordan

I want to go there.

9. McGinley follows Celtic, Monty supports Rangers

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
