Paul Kimmage: I may never speak to David Walsh again

The pair were good friends and colleagues for many years.

PAUL KIMMAGE ADMITS he may never repair the strained relationship with with his former colleague David Walsh.

The Irish journalists were at the heart of the Lance Armstrong story and their campaigning journalism is credited with helping to eventually disgrace the seven-time Tour de France champion.

Kimmage and Walsh have since fallen out however.

“It’s been very, very difficult,” the Dubliner says in a Sunday Independent interview. “Let’s just say we have had a difference of opinion. I spent about two hours in Dublin Airport screaming at him, letting him known exactly what I thought.

“Then we patched things up again and then July [and the Tour de France] came. What he wrote was also part of it. I don’t want to say too much about it out of respect to him, his kids, my kids. I don’t know if I will ever speak to him again. We fought in the same trenches for a long time but the difference is that I rode the Tour three times. It runs real deep with me.”

Walsh wrote in the Sunday Times last summer in defence of Team Sky and its Tour de France winner, Chris Froome.

Walsh — who enjoyed access to Dave Brailsford’s operation and produced a book on Sky — argued that ‘the mob’ are wrong about Chris Froome, the same way they were wrong about Armstrong.

Kimmage said on the Second Captains podcast at the time: “I was a bit surprised about the generalisations and I found it insulting in some ways, I’ve got to be honest.”

“Have I spoken to him? We’ve had several fraught conversations about this, this year. [H]e had an opinion on this four months ago and that opinion hasn’t changed. And he’s entitled to that opinion.”
