THE KERRY SENIOR hurling final between Lixnaw and Kilmoyley was today marred by an incident that saw Paul Galvin struck by an individual who ran onto the field wielding a hurley.

The incident, at Austin Stack Park in Tralee, happened just before referee John Sexton was ready to restart the second half with Kilmoyley leading 0-7 to 0-4.
However, before he had a chance to get proceedings under way, Kilmoyley wingback Tom Murnane appeared to be struck in an off-the-ball incident and, as he lay strewn on the turf, a major fracas developed with players from both sides racing to the scene close to the team dugouts.
At this point, an individual entered the playing field from the sidelines wielding a hurley and aimed blows at the upper body of Lixnaw star Galvin. While he did not take the full force of the blow, Galvin was struck before his team-mates intervened to stop the attacker.
A quick response from the stewards saw the attacker leave the pitch and was later escorted from the tunnel by Gardai.
The referee restarted the match with a yellow card for both Galvin and Murnane and it was the latter’s injury time point that ensured the game finished in a draw at 0-11 each.
Gardai say that no arrests were made at the stadium.
In a statement this evening the Kerry county committee said:
“The CCC of the Kerry county committee is awaiting the referee’s report before deciding what course of action to take following an incident that took place as players and officials made their way onto the field of play for the start of the second half in today’s senior hurling championship final.”
