He sits on five-under-par, four behind joint leaders Scott Brown and KJ Choi ahead of Sunday’s action at Torrey Pines.
But it’s a stacked leaderboard with just four strokes separating the top 23 players. Jimmy Walker and Gary Woodland are a shot off the pace on eight-under, while Dustin Johnson is among those still in the mix on six-under.
After opening with early bogeys at the first and again at the fourth, Dunne showed his resilience with two birdies to get back to level par by the turn.
A three-putt at the par-three 11th cost him another shot, but two big birdies — a 26 footer at 13, and another at the last — put him right in contention.
Dunne tees off for his final round alongside Patton Kizzire and Derek Fathauer at 3.50pm Irish time.
