After a number of relatively minor scuffles earlier in the match, a brawl erupted on 70 minutes and when order was finally restored, referee Cédric Marchat sent off La Rochelle flanker Johan Wessels and Pau back-row Marlon Solofuti.
Jordan Seneca’s red card then reduced La Rochelle to 13 men for the final minutes as Pau held on for a 30-16 win and a place in the second division final.
