A JINKING RUN and cool finish from Chris Forrester completed St Patrick Athletic’s 3-1 win over Dublin rivals Bohemians tonight in Richmond Park.
President Michael D Higgins was in attendance and he witnessed a sublime strike from Jason Byrne that had the visitors in front in the first half, but the champions showed plenty of quality to come back and take the win.
Pat’s came into the game off the back of a disappointing Setanta Cup semi-final defeat to Sligo Rovers on Monday night, but this win was their third on the bounce in the Airtricity League and they now sit third in the league table.
Both sides asked early questions of their opponents, and Conan Byrne in particular looked menacing for the champions on the right.
Keith Fahey and Craig Walsh locked horns early on in the middle of the park, and it was the former Birmingham City man who looked the more comfortable.
However, when Walsh gathered the ball 10-yards inside the Pat’s half after 24 minutes, he played a bending pass into the path of Jason Byrne who ran clear to the left before effortlessly chipping the ball to the far corner.
Conan Byrne continued to look threatening for Pat’s as the opening half unfolded, and it was his cross that led to the home side drawing level three minutes later.
Roberto Lopes could only direct Byrne’s delivery as far as Christy Fagan, and he managed to find the far bottom corner with a low drive.
The second half started with Conan Byrne once again raiding down the right flank, and he put the ball on a plate for Chris Forrester to make it 2-1, but he somehow guided his shot over from under the Bohemians crossbar.
Thankfully for Pat’s, a similar cross from the winger was converted by Fagan 60 seconds later, when he pounced on a loose ball in the Bohemians box.
And Forrester ended the night with a skilful run, beating two Bohs defenders before drilling the ball past Murphy.
