Patrick Reed apologises after foul-mouthed, homophobic Shanghai outburst

The American is in big trouble.

US RYDER CUP star Patrick Reed has apologised after a foul-mouthed outburst on the opening day of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Playing alongside Graeme McDowell, who carded a five-under par 67 to lead by two shots after the first round, Reed berated himself for missing a short putt at his first hole, the 10th, in a tirade that was picked up by TV microphones.

“Nice fucking three-putt you fucking faggot,” was clearly aired, forcing TV commentators to apologise to viewers for the language.

Reed took to Twitter late Thursday night to apologise.

“I’m sorry for using offensive language today in China. My passion to play well got the best of me and my word choice was unacceptable,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile the US PGA Tour issued a short statement on the issue, which appeared to indicate they are considering taking further action against Reed, who shot a one-under par 71.

“The PGA Tour’s Conduct Unbecoming regulations prohibit the use of obscene language on the golf course. The PGA Tour will deal with this matter internally in accordance with its regulations,” the statement said.

The WGC-HSBC Champions is sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the European Tour, Asian Tour and PGA Tour among its members.
