Paddy Power crown Manchester United Premier League champions

The bookmaker are understood to be paying in the region of £500,000 to punters who backed Alex Ferguson’s side.

MANCHESTER CITY’S SURPRISE loss to Southampton yesterday has prompted Irish bookmaker Paddy Power to payout on Manchester United winning the Premier League title.

Alex Ferguson’s side are currently nine points clear at the top of the table, and could go a further three points ahead if they beat Everton at Old Trafford today.

The move by the bookmaker will be considered a brave one by most, given the unpredictable nature of the Premier League this season, coupled with the fact that United were eight points clear of their rivals at a later stage last season, before letting their lead slip and allowing City to win the title.

The bookmaker are understood to be paying in the region of £500,000 in  total to punters who backed United outright.

They are also offering consolation to City fans by offering anyone who has set Mancini’s men as their team on Paddy’s team pages a free £5 bet on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power added:

“The fat lady might not be singing yet but she’s definitely getting warmed up. We can’t see United letting their lead slip and with Real Madrid to come in midweek we thought we’d take some of the pressure off Fergie and give punters an early payday.”
