Paddy Kenny sacked by new Leeds owner because of his date of birth

The former Ireland goalkeeper has left the Championship club, whose new owner is superstitious about the number 17.

PADDY KENNY’S BIRTH certificate has apparently given new Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino reason to force the Ireland international out of the club, The Guardian reported today.

Kenny,36, was on born on May 17. And apparently that little number between 16 and 18 is one that the superstitious Cellino simply can’t abide by.

As chairman of Serie A club Cagliari, Cellino ordered that there should be no seat numbered 17 in Stadio Is Arena and seats were instead labelled 16b.

Last season, Michael Brown wore the number 17 jersey at Elland Road and it will not be filled this season after the midfielder was released.

However, Cellino’s superstitions over that number and the colour purple (not the movie) may not be the only reason Kenny was shown the door.

The above image of a very out-of-shape Kenny has been in circulation in recent weeks. And with Kenny being among the top earners at the Championship club, his date of birth may well have been just a step too far.
