'Sometimes players can be wasted out wide' - Kavanagh thriving in central role

The Bohemians attacker has been one of their stand-out performers during the early stages of the campaign.

PADDY KAVANAGH IS relishing the added responsibility put on his shoulders by Bohemians boss Owen Heary this season.

The 28-year-old joined the Dublin club from Derry City after a difficult spell with the Candystripes last year.

Under Heary, however, the former Bray, Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne attacker has flourished in an advanced role behind the striker and scored the very first goal of the 2014 campaign in the opening day win over UCD.

Having spent much of his career as a winger, Kavanagh has been asked to be one of the team’s creative outlets in a more central role and says he couldn’t be happier with how it has gone so far from a personal point of view.

“He (Heary) has encouraged me to go create and play and enjoy myself,” Kavanagh told TheScore.ie. “He feels that when I get on the ball I can make things happen, create goals and maybe chip in with a couple myself.

“I’m here to play football, it’s what I love doing. I’m really enjoying getting on the ball and being more central to things rather than sometimes when games can pass you by when you play out wide.

“As a young lad I was a centre forward and when I was at Bray and Shels I played in there a few times,” he added.

Sometimes when you’re quick and smaller, managers will look to play you out wide. And sometimes players can be wasted out wide.

“I enjoy playing anywhere across the midfield and off the frontman is where I’m happy at the moment. So we’ll see how things go.”
