Bohs boss Heary set to take Sligo job

The Dubliner is expected to be named as the new Bit o’Red manager in the coming days.

BOHEMIANS BOSS OWEN Heary looks set to be appointed manager of Sligo Rovers in the coming days.

Heary will take the reins at the Bit o’Red after the departure of John Coleman, who left to return to Accrington Stanley over a month ago.

The Dubliner, who spent 20 years playing in the League of Ireland, took over at the Gypsies as caretaker manager in 2013 when then Bohs manager Aaron Callaghan was sacked. He retired from football, and having obtained his UEFA Pro licence earlier this year, was appointed manager of the Dublin 7 side for the 2014 season.

Working on a significantly lower budget than that of Sligo, Heary’s Bohs are currently in eighth place on 37 points, just six behind Sligo who have underachieved this year, with one game to go.

Former Shamrock Rovers manager Trevor Croly is believed to have turned down the opportunity to return to management by taking over at the North-West club, while former West Ham, Southampton and Reading coach Wally Downes was also linked to the job.

Joe Dunne, who left his job as Colchester manager in September, was initially a frontrunner for the job, while former St. Mirren boss Danny Lennon was also a strong contender in the early stages, but both are since said to be out of the running.

Former Rovers managers Willie McStay and Sean Connor are both reported to have applied for the position.
