Ousted O'Flatharta issues statement after Galway sacking

Tomas O’Flatharta has spoken out after his sacking as manager of the Galway footballers.

THE GALWAY FOOTBALLERS are seeking a new manager, after Tomás O’Flatharta’s reign brought to an end.

Defeats to Mayo and Meath in this year’s All-Ireland Championship and relegation from Allianz League Division 1 leaves the county’s club delegates seeking nominations for a new manager over the coming weeks.

O’Flatharta issued a statement on Saturday afternoon. While he insisted that the decision was taken too early, he is predicting a bright future for the players he left behind.

The statement read: “Last Wednesday, the Chairman of the Galway County Football Board, John Joe Holleran, indicated to me that I no longer had his support or that of the Executive Board for continuing in my role as Galway Senior County Football Manager.

“It was confirmed to me this morning (Saturday 9 August) that the decision was ratified at a meeting last night.

“I don’t want to become a focus of discontent or to cause dissent about the process by which that decision was arrived at. For that reason and with extreme reluctance, I accept the decision.”
