Messi tells Dembele to step up and be more professional at Barcelona

Ousmane Dembele has struggled for consistency since joining Barcelona, with Lionel Messi telling him to improve his professionalism.

LIONEL MESSI SAYS Ousmane Dembele needs to step up for Barcelona and be more professional.

Stories about Dembeleโ€™s discipline, including time-keeping issues, have been a constant thread through the France forwardโ€™s career to date.

His lack of development since swapping Borussia Dortmund for Camp Nou led to Dembele reportedly being offered to Paris Saint-Germain as a makeweight in a proposed deal for Neymar.

No transfer went through before the deadline at the start of September, however, with former Rennes starlet Dembele said to be reluctant to make the return to Ligue 1.

Barca captain Messi has made it clear more is expected of Dembele this term, although the 22-year-old scored eight LaLiga goals in 2018-19 when only starting 20 games.

โ€œI believe heโ€™s an impressive talent who can do whatever he wants,โ€ Messi said in an interview with SPORT. โ€œHe is very young and I think this year will be very important for him to make the step up that the whole of the Barcelona fanbase wants to see.

He needs to make that change to be more professional, to put that idea into his head, so he can be a success at Barcelona like he wants to be.

โ€œI hope he doesnโ€™t have the bad luck heโ€™s had with injuries.

โ€œLast year, when we needed him the most, he was injured. Hopefully that doesnโ€™t happen this year and heโ€™s able to show everything he has, which is a lot. As a player, heโ€™s very impressive.โ€

Messi, though, accepts it is not easy to thrive at Barca, with players such as Philippe Coutinho having failed to make their mark.

โ€œItโ€™s very difficult to play for Barcelona,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s the biggest club in the world and everything that comes with it is tough.

โ€œThe supporters, the groups, the media coverageโ€ฆ It isnโ€™t easy to come in and step out onto the Camp Nou pitch. It doesnโ€™t matter for some and others feel it immediately.

When someone has a strong mentality and is confident, everything works out. But not everyone is the same. Some people arenโ€™t able to adapt to these things in the same way.

โ€œIt isnโ€™t easy to play for Barcelona.โ€

Missed an open goal against liverpool to make it 4-0 after Messi put it on a plate. Another sitter too. The look of disgust on Messi after. Spectacular waste of money

A shameful waste of natural born talent because he canโ€™t be bothered to give a rats ass. He is young enough so hopefully he cops on before itโ€™s to late, many a player ended up regretting wasting the best years of their sporting lifeโ€™s thinking how different their careers could have been if only they realised how blessed they are with the opportunities they were given.
