Ouch! Gillingham defender suffers split scrotum

League Two player Chris Whelpale is recovering from a particularly nasty injury after Monday’s game.

A WEEK AFTER Blackburn Rovers defender Scott Dann’s ruptured testicle made us all wince, he’s been trumped in the most painful-sounding injury department.

Gillingham’s Chris Whelpdale was substituted in the 90th-minute of Monday’s 2-1 win over League Two leaders Crawley Town after a tackle which left him with a ripped scrotum.

“It’s a horrific injury,” Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent.

“He’s probably going to have to have five stitches in his testicles believe it or not, it’s ripped his testicles open. It’s absolutely disgusting, it was a shocking challenge for me and worthy of a red card.

“I’m not making that up, we’ve seen it in there. It’s an horrific injury and it’ll be pretty sure and I’m sure his wife won’t be too happy about that tonight either!”

Unsurprisingly, the 22-year-old former Peterborough defender is likely to miss Gillingham’s fixture with Dagenham on Friday due to the injury.

And in case you are wondering, there are no video clips of the incident available (thankfully!).
