THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND face a crucial World Cup qualifier against Sweden on Friday, with the omission of misfiring Wolves striker Kevin Doyle the major talking point at the final squad announcement on Saturday.
Ray Houghton expressed his shock on Saturday night’s Premier Soccer Saturday, insisting that Trap should have stuck with the Wexford man ahead of the inexperienced Conor Sammon for such a big game in Stockholm.
“I’m quite shocked to be honest. If you think back to recent games, he (Doyle) has been an influence when called upon,” he said.
“He has knowledge, understanding and experience. It’s about players who are tried, trusted and delivered and Kevin Doyle is one of those.
“I thought he would have been in the squad. He’s got more experience, better understanding of what’s required from him (than Conor Sammon).
“Conor is just starting his career at international level. I think I would rather have someone who’s been there before, who’s played in big games, knows what it takes and knows how to get results.”
We’re wondering what you make of Trap’s decision, and what would be your starting line-up against Sweden from the 23 men selected for that and Tuesday week’s clash with Austria in Dublin?
