O'Neill pens three-year deal to take charge of Sunderland

It’s been coming all week but Sunderland have finally confirmed that Martin O’Neill is their new boss.

MARTIN O’NEILL HAS been appointed as Sunderland’s new manager.

The former Leicester City, Celtic and Aston Villa boss has signed a three-year contract and takes over the reins from Steve Bruce, who has sacked during the week.

O’Neill will take charge of the Black Cats after Sunday’s relegation showdown against Wolves.

“It’s a very nice feeling to be back in football and to be the manager of Sunderland,” O’Neill told his new club’s official website. “It’s a big moment for me.

“I’d heard about what a good club it was but coming here, seeing the stadium and training ground, I’ve been bowled over. It’s absolutely fantastic. I hope I can help Sunderland to very successful period. That’s what I’ve come for and that’s my driving ambition.”

The 59-year-old won two League Cup titles while at Leicester City, achievements followed by significant success during his time at Celtic in the SPL.

O’Neill ventured back to the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2006 where he guided the club to three consecutive top-six finishes but has been out of football management since August 2010 when he resigned his position.
