O'Neill and Keane appointment was your biggest sports story of 2013

The arrival of the passionate duo into the Irish hot-seat polled highest from 10 of the year’s biggest sporting developments.

THE APPOINTMENT OF Martin O’Neill as the new Ireland manager, with Roy Keane as his assistant, was voted TheScore.ie readers’ top story of the year.

The new management team were given the task of guiding Ireland to Euro 2016 and began their tenure with a win over Latvia and a 0-0 draw away to Poland. Speaking, alongside Keane, on ITV a day after the FAI made the official announcement, O’Neill quipped, “I’m the bad cop and Roy is the bad, bad cop.”

23% of you voted the MONKeano appointment as your biggest sports story of the year. A close second, on 20%, was the murder charge laid down to Paralympic sprint champion Oscar Pistorius after the Valentine’s Day shooting of Reeva Steenkamp.

In third place [19%] was the controversy that erupted during the championship summer when Hawk-Eye was stood down after failing to register a point in the Limerick, Galway Minor Hurling semi final. Brian O’Driscoll’s axing from the Lions squad for the third Test against Australia and the Luis Suarez bite both polled 10%.
